FG May Release 104 Boko Haram Suspects

The Federal Government may soon release about 104 suspected members of the Boko Haram sect currently being held at the Kirikiri Minimum and Maximum prisons, Lagos.

Speaking to newsmen yesterday, when he led the committee on a visit to members of the sect in the prisons in Lagos State, Chairman of the Presidential Committee on Dialogue and Peaceful Resolution of Security Challenges in the North, Tanimu Turaki, said the visit was to interact with those who are being detained in connection with acts related to terrorism.

“We have interacted with them and they have responded to us very sincerely and frankly. “I think I can say that we have been well informed about most of the issues that we are interested in, as a result of the interactions we have had with them,” Turaki said.

The Chairman, who is also Minister of Special Duties and Inter-Governmental Affairs, explained that the committee will make appropriate recommendations to the government as far as the issue of their release or non-release is concerned.

“The issue of release usually is contingent upon certain conditions. We are more concerned, for now, with the release of vulnerable people. And in this group of vulnerable people we have those who the security agencies have not been able to pin anything on.

“We have seen those who the Director of Public Prosecution has advised that they be released. We have also seen some of them who security agencies themselves have conceded that they have not been able to make out any case against,” said Turaki.

He further noted that with the committee’s interaction with more stakeholders, it had become more informed.

“We have been given suggestions all of which will assist us in ultimately making our recommendations to government and I can assure you that the committee is on top of the situation as far as the issue of dialogue is concerned.”

He also noted that there will be impact assessment at the end of the day, “because we have been asked to study the situation carefully and to make appropriate recommendations for victim support.”

“I assure you that Nigerians will be very proud of this committee at the end of the day.

Family of Madonna Univeristy fire victim speak out

On Saturday June 8th, a room at Saint Peters boys hostel in the Okija campus of Madonna University, Anambra State, was gutted by fire, killing one student.

The family of the dead student, Chigozie Orluwehuje, (pictured above) just sent me something to publish so people can know what's happening with the case. See it below...

On the 8th of June 2013 at about 4pm the news of the fire incident got to the hearing of the mother Mrs Norra Orluwehuje and other family members by a student who happened to be a friend of Chigozie Orluwehuje, crying that the boy was one of the four that were engulfed in fire outbreak in the school hostel. The mother plus few of his relatives while on their way to school enquired of the news in the Elele campus and were directed to see one Father Francis who gave no listening ear to them according to a Rev. sister but asked us to enquire about anything in the information Centre in the school. The information center of the school openly told us that they knew nothing as at the time of the enquiry. They also refused to contact the Okija campus as to know the situation before embarking on the journey to Anambra state where the school is located.

On Sunday the 9th of June 2013 we went down to the school Madonna University Okija to ascertain what really happened. The CSO who took us to the Hostel and the boy’s room told them that the victims worked out from the hostel themselves mean while they got to the hospital and saw that they were all in coma. The CSO also confessed to us that the victims including Chigozie Orluwehuje who happened to be the hostel Rep. padlocked themselves from outside their room which was not possible because their room is in the third floor of the hostel. We interviewed some of the students who said they never would like names mentioned testified that the school authorities didn’t care about the victims and there was no first aid and to make it worst when some of the students who tried after rescue to rush them to nearby clinic was told there was no keys to open up the gate as at the point of rescue.


Up till this moment the school authority have not formally or officially informed the family of CHIGOZIE ORLUWEHUJE the death student in the fire incident, what actually happened. No remorse at all.

Shoalhaven City Council in Australia, displayed the gown made of condoms, in an exhibit at the council’s Entertainment Centre, with the aim of creating awareness about condom their use after an increase in rates of chlamydia.

In the past six months, the region has seen an increase of sexually transmitted diseases, with a 75 percent increase in women and 61 percent increase in men.

The council is trying to solve a real problem and ensure the health of the local community. They want to draw more attention and discussions to the issue of STDs and the importance of safe sex practices.

R.I.P: Four NANS Leaders Die In Auto Accident On Way To Uyo

Donald Onukaoguu, the Senate President of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) and four other students have been killed in a road crash.



The students met their end yesterday on their way to the University of Uyo, Akwa-Ibom State, to intervene in the current crisis rocking that institution.

The lone survivor for the accident, who is currently receiving treatment at the Federal Medical Centre, Umuahia, claimed that an illegal road block mounted by the police was responsible for the tragedy.

It would be recalled that yesterday, the police killed several students during a protest organized by students of Engineering at the university. That prompted the decision of the NANS leaders to embark on the urgent trip to Akwa-Ibom.

The Engineering students were protesting against new transport fees and other anti-student policies, including the contentious “No pay, No examination” policy.

Confirming the death of his colleagues this morning, the President of NANS, Yinka Gbadebo, blamed the tragedy on the police. “The police under the current IGP killed nine students within one week; the police action is barbaric and we call for the immediate resignation of the IGP, Mohammed Dikko Abubakar."

However, it is yet unclear how the incident happened. The survivor of the crash claimed that the police mounted an illegal road block by putting heavy logs and stones on the road and that the unsuspecting students, who were travelling in a NANS bus rammed into the illegal barrier. According to him, the police ran away immediately the accident occurred.

Another source, has, however controverted that account, claiming that a trailer crushed the students’ vehicle.

The Nigerian police have a poor reputation of extra-judicial killings. "We are closing down all campuses in Nigeria and national action will commence immediately," Mr. Gbadebo threatened.

In a similar occurrence last February, nine students of the Nasarawa State University in Keffi, died in a road accident at Mararaba, Karu Local Government Area as they fled from soldiers who attacked them during a campus protest.

In July last year, three students’ union leaders were killed on the Owo–Akure Road. They were the Student Union Presidents of the Federal University of Technology, Akure, Comrade Awopegba Oluwaseun, Comrade Akintola Abiodun of the Adeyemi College of Education, and Comrade Oyikan Olotu of the Ondo State School of Midwifery, Akure.

Photos: Scrap plane spotted being towed in Lagos

Relax people, no plane crash landed in Lagos yesterday. According NEMA spokesperson, the plane spotted on the streets of Lagos last night/early this morning is the scrap of an aircraft that was evacuated from the airport last night after the federal government issued a directive that all scrap aircraft be evacuated from all airports. The aircraft was spotted being towed along Mangoro and later seen at a gas station.
