“I Can’t Get Married Because Of Nigerian Media” – Rita Dominic

Rita Dominic, one of Nigeria’s top Nollywood actress and eligible spinster believes the reason she is not yet married is because the Nigerian media has not allowed her. The very pretty damsel who celebrated her 36th birthday few weeks ago, believe that the press has made her plans to settle down very frustrating as they have repeatedly killed her attempt at having a sustainable romantic relation.
Rita claims that some years ago, she was in a very serious relationship but the media killed it because of the pressure they put on her and since then, she has not been able to get a serious man because such relationships will definitely be exposed to the press.
But some industry watchers have told her to look inwards and stop blaming others for her relationship woes. They are of the opinion that if some of her colleagues like Omotola Jalade-Ekeinde, Mercy Johnson and Ini Edo can get married despite the so called pressure from the press, she too should work on herself.

"How I Got Married On An Airplane" - Omotola Jalade Ekeinde

Omotola Ekeinde recently had an interview with BBC journalist Matthew Bannister on BBC Outlook.
Here is what was written on BBC’s website;
To listen to the interview, click here but here are some highlights from the 12minutes plus interview.
Matthew Bannister: I’ve got to ask you this; how did you get this nickname Omosexy. Whose idea was that?
Omotola Jalade-Ekeinde: My husband’s (Laughs). That’s what he calls me. That’s my pet name.
MB: And didn’t he give you a car with the registration number?
OJE: Yes he did (Laughs). That’s so true.
MB: And you don’t mind it?
OJE: No I don’t. Initially I did. I thought it was bit cocky you know but then everybody caught up on it, and everybody actually prefers to call me Omosexy than Omotola, which is my real name. So I said okay, I’ll take it.
MB: Now, you got married when you were just eighteen (18) to an airline pilot. Who you met, I think a couple of years earlier when you were 16

OJE: I met him when I was 16.
MB: And didn’t you get married on board a plane?
OJE: Yes I did
MB: Tell me about that, what was the idea behind that? He wasn’t flying it at the time, was he?
OJE: No he wasn’t flying (They both laugh). But he did. He actually flew for like 10 minutes.
MB: It was a big airline, wasn’t it?
OJE: Yeah, it was a big airline

ASUU strike: ANC gives FG seven-day ultimatum

A civil rights organisation, the Anti-Corruption Network, has given the Federal Government one week to resolve its dispute with the striking members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities.

It said it would mobilise Nigerians for a protest to the Federal Ministry of Education.

The group, which expressed disappointment at governments lukewarm attitude to the plight of students, suggested that President Goodluck Jonathan should take loan to offset the N92bn being demanded by ASUU.

It said in a statement by its Executive Secretary , Dino Melaye, that governments attitude showed that it had no interest in the future of Nigerian students.

The statement reads in part, The ongoing face-off between the Federal Government and ASUU is a reflection of bad government and keeping quiet would be like the proverbial adult who, while at home, allowed the she-goat to suffer the pains of malnutrition on its tether.

The Federal Government as far back as 2009 went into an agreement with ASUU and signed that agreement. Why will you agree to what you dont intend to do? A gentleman will go into an agreement and then carry out the agreement to the latter. The agreement was made in 2009; why was there no budgetary provision for that agreement in 2010, 2011, 2012 and 2013?

Why would the Federal Government enter into an agreement they dont intend to implement? So we are giving them one week of grace and if by Friday next week, the government did not resolve the crisis with ASUU, we will mobilise Nigerians, students and parents to be on the streets to protest against this reckless and irresponsible government.

By Friday next week, if the Federal Government refuses to resolve the ASUU crisis, we will protest to the Federal Ministry of Education where we will register our anger against an insensitive government.

They just went to China to secure a loan of $1.1bn. Why is it difficult for the Federal Government to raise N92bn to solve the problem in our education sector? Education is the bedrock of every development; it is the bedrock of any nation. It is shameful that the Federal Government is showing this lackadaisical attitude towards the next generation………

Top Nigerian entertainers who had children out of wedlock

Our Nigerian showbiz stars are not only in the business of making money and making music, they are also in the business of making babies some of them out of wedlock. Here are some with children out of wedlock

Ice Prince
Sometime last year Babatunde Bimbo hit the news after she opened up about carrying the child of the Oleku super star, Ice Prince Zamani. Several denials and rejections trailed her announcement. Ice Prince blatantly rejected the baby. Bimbo had to quit school in order to keep the pregnancy. The baby was christened Toluwalase. In a sudden twist of events, Mister Zamani embraced his child and later renamed him Jamal.

In an interview, he was asked by a reporter how he felt about being a New dad, Ice Prince didnt mince words, he hit the nail on the head admitting he is now a dad

Even though the Oleku superstar initially denied having a son with Bimbo Babatunde, he has finally accepted the paternity of the boy. These days he proudly flaunts his pictures of him carrying Jamal on the social media.

Wizkid
He is the chart-topping musical wonder-kid whose meteoric rise to the peak of the music industry has been nothing short of breathtaking. Life as a star boy however does have its downsides. Even though he also initially denied the paternity of his son, he has finally concurred.

Mother of the child, Oluwanishola Ogudugu was a student of the Houdegbe North American University Cotonou, Benin Republic. His son Boluwatife turned two sometime in May this year and Wizkid showered him with lots of birthday gifts. Even though Wizkid is not currently dating his babys mum, he has been a good father to his son.

Terry G
The energetic and restless Terry G also belongs to the league of celebrity daddies. He definitely wasnt testing the microphone when he did this. He has a baby boy, with his fiance Mimi Omoregbe, who was delivered sometime last year in the U.K.

Timaya
The self-confessed Dem Mama Soldier welcomed his
baby girl in May 2012. Timaya christened his daughter Emmanuella Perere Timaya. According to him: In building my own dynasty which is why my baby and the other ones that would come after her would bear Timaya as their surname, not Odom.
Timayas baby mama is a dark skinned singer and budding actress named Barbara whom Timaya reportedly met in 2010. Reports say Timaya put Barbara and Emmanuella in an apartment in the heart of Ikeja and bought her a GL Fomatic 450 Benz, valued at about N13m.Timaya has managed to stay out of controversy since he became a dad even though the Empress saga still haunts him.

Paul of P-Square
It is no longer news that Paul of P-Square has a son named Andre with his long time girl friend, Anita. Earlier, Paul had announced his plans to marry her. Peter amazingly took to twitter when he wrote that Paul and his heart beau, Anita, were expecting their first child. Reports say that Paul started dating Anita even before he became renowned in the entertainment industry. She has always been part of his success story. Andre is a post graduate student of the University of Dundee, Scotland

May-D
Former Square Records artiste, Akinmayokun Awodumila a.k.a May D also is part of the ever growing list of celebrity fathers who are not married. Why every woman needs an inner bitch

Our mothers taught us right from an early age to be ladies and act properly, same thing their mothers taught them and same thing we would teach our daughters.

However, as much as it is good to act like a lady and ditch the bitch-y side of us, we shouldn’t let the bitch in us go too far away.

By the way, every woman’s got an inner bitch somewhere inside of her, all she has to do is activate it when needed.

Women are naturally treated less fairly in society by men but what’s worse is that sometimes, a woman can get worse treatment from another woman! Crazy don’t you think? Thank heavens for the inner protector that saves the day! Here’s when you’re allowed to activate the bitchy part of you.

1. When you are being treated like a second class citizen- ever heard people take major decisions past you simply because you’re female? This happens in a lot of extended family meetings in Africa, you’re not expected to make a bright decision and forget that you are schooled and the most enlightened, the fact that you’re not male makes you second to the men. Dear sister, you are very much allowed to turn on the bitch inside of you and take charge. Don’t sit there, acting like a lady when you’re being discriminated, take charge!

2. When your in laws are refusing to back off- nobody is asking you to be rude of your in laws, but when your mother in law won’t stop taking major decisions in your home like its an extension of hers, then maybe it is time to stand your ground. Call her, politely and sweetly tell her you appreciate the love and care but you’d rather she allows you man your boat. Stand your ground and rightfully demand what’s yours!

3. At work- men naturally become extra defensive when they have a female boss. Some men would even go as far as saying that they can’t respect a female boss because they won’t accord that much respect to their wives at home. Good for them. However, this is the office and you are the boss. Now its either they abide strictly by the office rules and accord you all the respect you command as a boss, or they clear their desks, go home and be the boss there. Simple and very clear.

4. Egomaniacs- the ones who carry their ego to the road and yell chauvinistic words at you while you drive? You are allowed to roll down your glass, size them up and insult them for the lack of home training(just once). Just do it once, its okay. Its fine.

'My ordeal in the hands of kidnappers' - Mike Ozekhome recounts

The human rights lawyer (pictured above with his wife after his release) who said he will never forget his experience in the hands of his abductors, narrated his ordeal to journalists in his home in Lagos.

Ozekhome, who had grown a beard, said he was driven on a rough road for about four hours to a jungle far removed from civilisation blindfolded, after he was captured close to Benin City about 3pm on August 23, 2013.

According to Ozekhome, the abductors took him to an uncompleted building in the bush while a colony of mosquitos descended and fed on him and other hostages like barbeque in the camp.

According to him, from the moment of his abduction on August 23, he and 12 other victims were blindfolded by the gang in the camp. Continue...

Ozekhome also said any time they wanted to speak to their abductors, they must face the ground, as looking at them (kidnappers) could hand the offender instant death sentence.

“Every 24 hours of the day, we had death sentence hanging on our head. When any of the kidnappers wanted to speak to us, we must face the wall or the ground. They treated me gently because they said they had discovered I’m on the side of the masses, that I have been fighting for the masses.

Speaking further, he explained that his psychological and physical trauma was compounded when his son, Barrister Ilugbekhai and one of his juniors in chambers, Barrister Dominic Ezerioha, were lured and eventually detained with him in the camp.

He described his abductors as highly organised and well educated, which, according to him, made it difficult for security operatives to track them down.

He said: “Even when making phone calls to the families of the victims, they travelled across four or five states so that where they make the calls was different from where their victims were kept. They discussed national issues with high intellect.

“These are graduates of various disciplines, I believe. They understand philosophy, history, political science and, as I said, they have their medical team. One of them said he had graduated for six years without a job and they argued that only 1 per cent of Nigerians have fraudulently cornered the nation’s wealth; so they raise argument to justify their actions.”

“They vowed that, in 2015, they will move against the politicians who they accused of being in the habit of using and dumping them. I asked them, what is the way out? They requested that the federal government should also grant them amnesty and that they are ready to lay down their arms if they are given amnesty just like the Niger Delta militants.

“They said they are ready to come out of the jungle to remove their masks and join the roundtable talk if there is assurance that they will not be arrested by the government.”

According to Ozekhome, the kidnappers have several units and cells across the nation. “For example, they mentioned several notable Nigerians who had been kidnapped in the past in the north, east and west, which they claimed were through their network.”

Contrary to the general belief that the kidnappers usually conduct background information about their victims, Ozekhome said his abductors told him that they just operate randomly and that they don’t profile anybody before they are captured.

“For example, they said they did not know me. They searched through my pocket. They collected everything including my card. So when they asked for my name and I told them, they said yes it is true.”

Moving forward, Ozekhome urged the federal government to declare a state of emergency on insecurity. According to him, a situation where none of us is safe on the road, in the air, on the water, in the day time or at night is a serious and monumental problem and we cannot continue to fold our hands.

He linked the problem of insecurity fundamentally to the massive youth unemployment in the country which he described as complex and gargantuan.

Consequently, he called on the government to declare a state of emergency on youth unemployment as any further delay may spell doom for the nation. He described youth unemployment as the father of Boko Haram, militancy, kidnapping and robbery.

Blobfish voted 'world's ugliest animal'

The Ugly Animal Preservation Society recently held a competition to elect their global mascot. While there were 11 very deserving nominees, the blobfish beat out the competition, to be the British organization's face. The Ugly Animal Preservation Society was founded to raise the profile of animals in need of protection, particularly those who may not be as esthetically pleasing as, say, the giant panda or the African elephant.

6 Things You Shouldn't Eat (or Drink) Before Bed

What not to eat before bedtime

Experts offer tips to ensure that your diet's not leading to sleepless nights.

1. Spicy food
Think twice before having chicken vindaloo for dinner. Eating a big, highly seasoned meal close to bedtime can interfere with your shut-eye. "It's not that the spice interrupts your sleep," says Mark Mahowald, professor of neurology at the University of Minnesota Medical School. "The spice causes heartburn, and that interrupts your sleep." Fiery foods can lead to indigestion and reflux, and, as a result, to "sleep fragmentation," says Lisa Medalie, a behavioral sleep medicine specialist at the University of Chicago. She recommends eating heavy or spicy foods at least three hours before bedtime.

2. Chocolate or other caffeine-filled food
Your body can take up to 5 hours to get caffeine out of your system. And if you're susceptible to feeling jittery, skipping the afternoon latte might not cut it. "Several studies have shown that 30 milligrams of caffeine - about the amount of caffeine in a candy bar - can have alerting effects and disruptive effects on sleep," says Timothy Roehrs, director of research at the Sleep Disorders and Research Center of the Henry Ford Health Center. Watch out for sneaky caffeine hiding spots like chocolate-covered espresso beans and chocolate cake. "If you take a small slice or have a couple bites, that probably will not affect sleep," says Phyllis Zee, MD, associate director of the Center for Sleep & Circadian Biology and professor at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine. "But if you already have insomnia, I would avoid eating anything late or anything that contains caffeine."

3. Alcohol
Go easy on the wine at dinner, if you're one to toss and turn at night. Alcohol is a depressant, which makes you drowsy, but then its effect reverses. "Alcohol has two effects," explains Jerry Siegel, professor of psychiatry and director of the Center for Sleep Research at UCLA. "One is to put you to sleep, and the other is to wake you up three or four hours later." Alcohol also reduces the amount of REM rest (the final stage in the sleep cycle). "It just doesn't provide a good substitute for natural sleep. Often people wake up less refreshed," says Clete Kushida, medical director of the Stanford Sleep Medicine Center.

4. Water
Sure, staying hydrated is healthy. But drink up throughout the day and don't guzzle water at night. Lay off drinks 60 to 90 minutes before shut-eye. "Give [the body] enough time to void that fluid before bed," says Zee.

5. Giant meals
Your body is not prepared to digest heavy meals or decadent desserts right before bedtime. Not to mention that staying up late, noshing on goodies, may disrupt your normal circadian rhythm, says Roehrs.

6. Nothing
On the flip side, don't go to bed famished, either. "Starvation or excessive hunger causes sleeplessness and increased activity," says Ruth M. Benca, MD, PhD, director of the Center for Sleep Medicine and Sleep Research at the University of Wisconsin at Madison. "If there's a general rule of thumb, being too hungry makes it difficult to sleep and eating a lot of food makes it difficult to sleep." If hunger strikes after dinner, try a small snack, such as a mini pack of almonds, an hour before bedtime, says Zee.

Girl Serves Six-Hour Jail Term For Killing Her Rapist Father

A court in Uganda sentenced a teen age girl to a six-hour jail term for killing her rapist father

It was probably one of the most unusual sentences delivered in the country, but the case was just as unusual as it was heartrending.

The Masaka High Court presided over by Lady Justice Margaret Oumo Oguli, Monday heard that 18-year-old girl killed her father on May 8, after he had molested her.

It was not the first time he was doing so. The 58-year-old man had been molesting the daughter repeatedly from the time she was 13 years old.

Prosecution led by Peter Mugisha told court that the convict violently killed her father using a knife and a panga after the deceased performed sexual acts against her.

Mr Mugisha, however, asked court to give her a maximum sentence which requires death, saying the act she performed was illegal.

A lenient sentence

His argument was that she should have reported the matter to police and not killed him.

Defence led by Mr Edward Kikirengoma, however, did not agree with the State, saying the act the father did to his daughter was condemned, especially in Buganda Kingdom.

Mr Kikirengoma told court that the convict needed to take charge of her life since she had become tired of her father’s cruel acts, adding that court should look into the condition of the girl as she was six months pregnant, with the child of her father.

“..... revealed that as she was sleeping in the house, she did not know that her mother, 56, had gone out; her father learnt that his wife wasn’t in the house and came into her bed and molested her. Since they were living in a one-room rented house, the father took advantage of his own children,” Mr Kikirengoma said.

It emerged that the man had also impregnated his three other daughters.
Defence therefore asked court to give the killer a lenient sentence.

Student Arrested With Cocaine At Enugu International Airport

Chizoba Anselem Nwabuwa after arrest

Barely few weeks after the jubilation that greeted the commencement of international flights at the newly upgraded Akanu Ibiam International Airport, Enugu; the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has made its first arrest and cocaine seizure. The suspect, Chizoba Anselem Nwabuwa 32 year-old 400 Levels Fine and Applied Arts student was apprehended during the inward screening of passengers on an Ethiopian flight from Brazil enroute Addis-Ababa. He was found to have ingested liquid cocaine packed inside male condoms.

liquid cocaine in male condums ingested by Chizoba Anselem Nwabuwa

The head of the NDLEA at the Enugu Airport, Mr Nsikak-Abasi Udoh who confirmed the arrest said that the suspect excreted 25 wraps of a liquid that tested positive for cocaine. “The suspect excreted twenty-five (25) wraps of liquid substance. When tested with the United Nations drug testing kit, it tested positive for cocaine weighing 1.250kg. This first arrest and seizure is exciting to us because we just commenced operations” Nsikak-Abasi stated.

According to the suspect, “I am a 400 level student of Fine & Applied Arts at the Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, Anambra State. I wanted to use the half a million naira (N500,000) they promised to pay me in developing my Art Gallery. They assured me in Brazil that authorities will not be able to detect liquid cocaine, so I was confident. Unfortunately, things have turned-out the other way. I regret my involvement in drug trafficking”. Chizoba who is single hails from Ihiala Local Government Area of Anambra State.

Chairman/Chief Executive of NDLEA Ahmadu Giade expressed satisfaction with the arrest. In his words, “the Agency accords high priority attention to all the airports. We shall continue to up-scale our operations at the airports and prevent drug trafficking syndicates from using the nation’s airports”.

Giade urged members of the public to pursue legitimate businesses at all times noting that a good name is far better than ill-gotten wealth.

The suspect will soon be charged to court.

FG denies ordering customized gold iPhones; issues statement

The Federal Government has reacted to the news that they ordered 53 gold gold-plated iPhone 5S for N682million. The report went viral after the CEO of Gold and Co., UK, Amjad Ali, told UK newspaper, The Independent, that our government ordered these phones from his firm as part of the memorabilia for the nation’s 53rd Independence anniversary on October 1, 2013. Jonathan's government has denied this and issued a statement. Find it below...

We consider the reports in a section of the media claiming that the Nigerian government had ordered customized gold iPhones from a Dubai-based company to mark the country’s 53rdindependence anniversary in October not only false and misleading, but utterly mischievous.
It is instructive that despite the refutation of the story by the company, which ought to have laid the mischief to rest, a number of politically-minded news media continue to insist on promoting the blatant falsehood. We deplore their antics as yet another attempt to use any trick or means possible to discredit President Jonathan’s well-meaning, hardworking and focused administration.
The company, Gold and Co., has since explained that what was written on Independent was different from what the CEO actually said. They explained that the phones were not ordered by the government but by a Nigerian who asked them to put the crest of the Nigerian govt on the back. Continue..

The statement continues...

It is certainly a matter of public record and knowledge that since his assumption of office, President Jonathan has ensured that October 1 independence-day anniversaries are low-key, without any pomp or pageantry. Ironically, even this prudence generated criticisms from a cynical and opportunistic segment of the public which alleged, in 2011, and again in 2012, that the President was either too scared to celebrate or that the government was broke.

This administration has no intention to depart from its established habit of prudent management of resources and modest celebration of the country’s independence anniversary. This year, the public should be assured that the October 1 anniversary will also be low-keyed. Neither the Federal Government nor its agencies has ordered any gold iPhones to mark the anniversary.

We do not see any justification for such extravagance either now or at any other time. The Jonathan administration’s gold standard is to continue to provide responsible, committed, and result-oriented leadership, not to engage in the purchase and distribution of party gifts.

We urge the Dubai-based company, which has since said that the order for the said 53 gold i-phones was placed by a private individual and not the Nigerian Government, to go ahead and disclose the identity of that individual. We appeal to the public to beware of the increasing desperation of those with politically vested interests, seeking to pull down this administration. Their moral bankruptcy is condemnable.

The Jonathan administration will remain focused as it continues to serve the Nigerian people diligently.

Pics: Police prevent Gov. Amaechi from entering Government House

Another crisis is brewing in Rivers State. Early this evening, the convoy of the governor of Rivers State, Rotimi Amaechi was prevented from using one of the two entrances to the Government House in Port Harcourt by a team of police. The governor's convoy was stopped by four truck loads of policemen as it made its way through the private gate of the governor's official residence. The policemen, led by several senior officers, claimed they were acting on orders from above.

After about 45 minutes of arguing, which included Governor Amaechi himself coming down from his car to speak with the policemen, the governor's convoy had not choice but to leave and take another road to access the main entrance into the Government House. See more photos after the cut...
