The police on Friday arraigned two men before anAbuja Grade 2 Area Court for allegedly attempting to buy a gun from an officer at a police station.
The men, Abdulkareem Sani, 26, and Mohammed Grema, 22, were alleged to have offered N200,000 to oneCpl.Abdulmalik Umar of the Mabushi Police Station to buy the gun.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the accused persons are facing a two-count charge of joint act and attempt to commit an offence.The Police Prosecutor, Mr Abdullahi Alhassan, told the court that the accused persons offered the sum of N50,000 as deposit for the gun.
“They were arrested at the point of payment at the police station premises at Mabushi,’’ he said.Alhassan said the offence contravened the provisions of sections 79 and 95 of the Penal Code.According to Section 79, each individual in a criminal act by several persons is liable for that act in the same manner as if it were carried out by him alone.Section 95 states that “whoever attempts to commit an offence should be punished with imprisonment for a term which may extend to one half of the longest term provided for that offence, or with such a fine as is provided for the offence, or with both.’’
The accused persons, however, pleaded not guilty to the two-count charge.The Presiding Judge, Mr Ahmed Ado, granted bail to the accused persons in the sum of N250,000 each and two reliable sureties each, before adjourning the case. (NAN)
