
Dozens of people were injured as more than 130 vehicles were involved in a series of crashes on the A249 Sheppey crossing in Kent today. The crash which went on for 10 minutes as cars continuously collided with each other was caused by a thick fog.



According to eyewitnesses, visibility had been very poor at the time of the crash but drivers were
approaching the crossing with no lights.
One witness said:
'You would hear the screeching of brakes and then a thud. It was all you could hear for about 10 minutes - crash after crash after crash.' The whole top of the bridge is full of mangled cars and lorries. There are cars with their roofs ripped off - one is five feet in the air. There were a lot of people trapped.'
The accidents left at least six people seriously injured and 200 suffering minor wounds.
No one is believed to have died in the crash.
