Three of the dead, Mallam Maharazu, 20, Muhammad Ma'aruf, 12, Muhammad Kabiru, 8 were brothers. The fourth, seven year-old Muhammad Halliru, was assisting the brothers to excavate sand for making mud bricks, witnesses said. The sand buried them and they couldn't be rescued early enough to escape death.
Sympathisers spent hours making frantic efforts to rescue them but they were all found dead when they got to them. It was gathered that residents had been excavating sand at the site for many years before yesterday's incident.
Secretary of the local government, Alhaji Garba Lawal, said fruitless efforts were put up to rescue them from 10: 30 am till about 1:00pm when they were found dead.
Lawal pointed out that three of the victims were resting while the fourth victim was excavating sand when the incident occurred, saying their remains were handed over to their families for burial.
He added that the council chairman, Alhaji Nasiru Iyatawa, had paid condolence visits to families of the victims and commiserated with them. He also donated food items to their families.
