Man, 27, arraigned in Lagos for attempting to kill his father



A court has heard how a man escaped death in Lagos after he shot his son in self defence. The 27-year-old man, Oyeniyi Anthony, allegedly attempting to kill his father, Anthony Oyeniji, with a kitchen knife.

An Ebute-Meta Magistrate’s Court listened to police report which stated that the accused broke into the room of the complainant at Oyeniji Street in Akowonjo area of Lagos, around 11pm, wielding a knife.

The father who was said to have a licensed gun, was able to disarm his son by shooting him in the hand and then called the police to arrest him.

The charge sheet read in part, “That you, Oyeniyi Anthony, ‘m’, on the 18th day of June, 2013, at about 11pm at Oyeniji Street, Akowonjo, Lagos in the Lagos Magisterial District with intent to intimidate, did threaten to kill one Anthony Oyeniji, with a kitchen knife.”

The prosecutor, Cpl. Onaiwu Iyobosa said the offence was punishable under Section 56(a) of the Criminal Laws of Lagos State Nigeria, 2011.

The defendant however said he was not guilty of the charges.

The magistrate, Mr. F.J Adefioye admitted the defendant to bail in the sum of N200, 000 with one surety in like sum.

The matter was adjourned till July 31 for trial.
