There was pandemonium in Abuja on Tuesday when a house located at no 68, 4th Avenue, Gwarinpa was gutted by fire. The fire which gutted the 8 flat duplex started from the room where Miss Unoma Ezeogu, who works as a transmission officer with the AIT lives. The newsmen got to the scene of the incident which started about mid-day, efforts were underway by some residents of the area to put out the inferno. However, the fire had miraculously remained within Unoma’s room until the arrival of men the Fire Service.
Even with the arrival of the men of the Fire Service, it was already too late for them to save a single property belonging to the lady who identified herself as a graduate of the Institute of Management and Technology (IMT) Enugu.
Speaking with the reporter amid tears, Unoma said she was in the office when she got a call that her room was on fire. She said on getting to the house, the inferno had already taken over the room, and the effort of the Fire Service men could only save the other attached flats. Unoma who said she was meant to get married before April, lamented why fire could from nowhere jump into her room of all the rooms and left her with nothing. She said ‘’ I didn’t leave anything on, and I have never experienced any light problem prior to this incident. I came into Abuja with nothing. I was just a youth corps member when I got myself a place. I got all the things in the room with my hard earned sweat, and today all that is gone. Where will I start from? I know that I’m left with nothing at the moment, but I have God, I have Jesus’’ she said.
She further said that her loss could be estimated at N5million naira as she was not able to save any of her property apart from her certificates that were mysteriously not touched by the inferno. She praised God for having protected her certificates from the eyes of the devil.
Speaking on the way forward, she said, ‘’I know I have to start all over again, but God will lead me. I have no other person but Him. As you can see, two of my designer’s machines were burnt. Aside from my official work, I’m equally a Tailor. Right now I have to buy new clothes, as I’m left with just what you can see on me at the moment. I have to buy new Plasma TV, new Refrigerator, Deep freezer, new bed, new mattress, new gas cooker and a host of others, just too numerous to mention. I had people’s cloths in that room. What about the money that I left in the house? All that is gone with the wind. God will help me’’ she lamented.
